(Or, in other words, here’s what you should NOT be doing)

 


1.  Looking at the BIG corporate businesses and trying to market like they do, with pretty ads, brochures, clever slogans, funky looking colours, etc.

2.  Watching what your competitors are doing and blindly copying them.

3.  Letting advertising agencies or graphic artists design all your materials.

4.  Buying whatever your friendly local ad rep is selling that day.  Radio ads because they’ve got a deal.  Newspaper ads, because they say they are really great.  Yellow pages ads because you’ll be a ‘schmuck’ if you don’t – etc.

5.  Letting that same advertising rep, or someone from their company create the ad for you.

6.  Not measuring your different advertising methods to really see which ones work and which one’s don’t.

7.  Delegating your marketing decisions to your spouse, secretary, advertising representative, or anyone else.

8.  Closing your eyes, signing big cheques and hoping for the best when it comes to advertising!

O.K., let’s take a look at how I’ve personally done this in a variety of different businesses AND countries!


 


Case Study #1:  Costa Rican Language Training Company.  1993 – 2003.
I started this company with $800 and as an illegal alien in a foreign country, in a foreign language!  By learning about effective marketing I took my company from being a low-price competitor at the bottom of the pack to #3 in the country (with over 50 direct and indirect competitors) in 2.5 years.  I was one of the most expensive options available, and of the 2 companies who were ahead of me, one was an internationally known franchise (Berlitz) and the other was subsidized by the U.S. government (kind of like what Mr. Obama is doing now with General Motors…).  The kind of marketing I’m going to show you is what made this business so successful.

Case Study #2:  Creative Real Estate Investing Business – Canada 2004-2006.
I did 18 “flips” in 18 months in spite of working without investors or much money (in other words – the DUMB way).  That sounds impressive, but I left at least 20 other good deals on the table because I didn’t know how to handle them.  The marketing I did created so much deal flow that I was able to be successful in spite of only being able to deal with a very limited range of properties.


Case Study #3:  Advertising Business – Canada 2005 – 2006.
I became Darren Weeks’ 4th licensee for Doorknob Ads and used this kind of super effective marketing to sell out an entire run of advertising in a brand new city…all by mail, without meeting anyone face-to-face!  I then got the clients to pre-pay for their ads by credit card!  Compare this to ‘typical’ advertising sales where the client pays 30-90 days AFTER the ad has been published!

Case Study #4:  Fast Track’s “How to Get Rich in Canada” Events, 2006 – present.
After nagging Darren Weeks for 6 months to let me market one of his events in my home town of Kamloops, he finally relented.  With 1/3 the budget, and in a city less than 10% of the size of his normal markets, I got almost 500 people out to his event (the ‘norm’ in a big city was 300) by
using super-effective marketing.  That was a 60% increase in attendees with 33% of the normal budget!  That is how I became the ‘marketing guy’ for Darren, and a significant part of the reason Fast Track has grown to over $100M a year in sales.

a.  way smarter than me, or…

f.   just some weird ‘freak of nature’!”


Sidney, Sidney, Sidney.  Tsk, tsk, tsk.  We need to work on your low self esteem (and manners) buddy!  Let’s take a quick look at these objections.

 

a.  “Dave is way smarter than me”.  I don’t think I’m way smarter than anybody…in fact, I don’t consider myself to be the brightest bulb on the Christmas tree (and my wife would agree).  I was a mediocre student through school and university.  I’m thinking that if you can read this letter and chew gum at the same time, we’re about on par!  What I have done is to study other very successful marketers, taken what they have done and applied it to my different businesses.  You can do the same thing.  So ‘being smarter’ is out of the running.

b.  “Dave is just really lucky, and I’m not”.  I have to admit that I am a fortunate fellow – wonderful kids, beautiful wife who loves me, work that I enjoy, amazing “Brad Pitt-like” good looks and modesty ;)  But when it comes to marketing, I don’t believe in ‘luck’.  If I got those kinds of results just once and in only one kind of business – then that could be attributed to ‘luck’ – but I was able to do it across multiple businesses, industries and countries.  I don’t rely on luck.  I never buy lotto tickets or gamble – so luck is NOT part of this – just the kind of luck you create for yourself.

c.  “Dave has more money to spend on marketing than I do”.  Well that is probably true… now.  But it hasn’t always been that way!  Remember the Costa Rica language business?  I had $800 to my name to get the whole business up and running and do marketing!  I got started by sending 30 sales letters out at a time, because that is all I could afford.  Then I built it up from there as the business became more profitable and successful.  So if you’ve only got $100.00 to work with, start with that then build up.

d.  “Dave has more time…”  That is probably true today, however at one point (a very painful memory I must say) I was trying to juggle 5 different businesses at the same time – and I was still doing marketing.  I think I know what being time challenged is!

e.  “Dave is full of B.S.” OUCH!  That’s kind of personal Sid.  Sometimes us marketers get a bad rap.  But like they say in Texas “it ain’t braggin’ if ya dun it!”  All of my case studies are completely provable.  And you know first hand about Fast Track.
